What percent of animation jobs do you think are outside California but in the US?
I currently live in Florida and one of the main issue about being a professional animator is the daunting prices of California to my parents(Although I’d love to take on that challenge because California is awesome, just not within my means at the moment). I have heard of a few others studios outside California, one is in Atlanta, Georgia for example, but I was wondering have you heard of any others and what general percent of jobs roughly would you estimate are not in California but also are in the US for animation(international jobs aren’t really an option, but I would consider ones with travel)?
Also I know the word animation is a little vague the way I am using it, I just mean any jobs directly related to computer animation, 2d animation, or anything close to those two. ^_^ Thanks for the help!
It’s true that most of your animation companies/jobs are indeed located in the California area, and because of its geographical ties to Hollywood, most of the elite animation companies such as Disney,Pixar,Warner, and Fox, will no doubt be there forever. However, having said that, what used to be a rather small number of up and coming animation studios outside of California and the west coast in general, have now increased in numbers across the country and especially on the east coast. Granted that most of them are small independent studios compared to the west coast, but many of them also have industry ties to those elite studios mentioned earlier. In addition, with the quality of animation technology being produced right on commercial laptops/desktops, you can compete within the animation field right from home. The key to breaking into the animation field is having a really good demo reel that will show your potential employer your basic skills in 3D modeling, character design and traditional art skills as well. Just remember that ANY animation job is a great job as far as getting your foot in the door. Afterwards, the knowledge and experience you gain will allow you to write your own ticket in the industry by showcasing your talent and allowing the animation gods to see it. Next thing ya know, your phone is ringing and they’re wanting to hire you, like, yesterday. GOOD LUCK!
