Are there still digital ink and paint jobs in animation left in the US?
I was wondering if there was anyone out there who knew if there were any animation studios IN THE US – that still do their own digital ink and paint? I have a Bachelor of Computer Animation from SCAD and specialized in DIP.
I have found that all of the jobs of the DIP have been outsourced overseas. Is there still hope of me getting into a digital ink and paint position in the US?
I can’t believe I went to school for so long and there just aren’t any jobs in this field anymore. I know 2D is quickly falling by the wayside and the only 2D really left is television animation and a few movies – The Simpsons. Though I think that might have been 3D colored to resemble 2D.
I just want to work in my field, doing what I love, and what I’m good at. I have worked on a couple of movies and tv series as well.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
I’m close to your field and noticed the same thing. I know the group that did Sky Captain was completely domestic at the time.

Computer Animation $63.27 Computer animation (or CGI animation) is the art of creating moving images with the use of computers. It is a subfield of computer graphics and animation. Increasingly it is created by means of 3D computer graphics, though 2D computer graphics are still widely used for stylistic, low bandwidth, and faster real-time rendering needs. Sometimes the target of the animation is the computer itself, but sometimes the target is another medium, such as film. It is also referred to as CGI (computer-generated imagery or computer-generated imaging), especially when used in films. To create the illusion of movement, an image is displayed on the computer screen and repeatedly replaced by a new image that is similar to the previous image, but advanced slightly in the time domain (usually at a rate of 24 or 30 frames/second). This technique is identical to how the illusion of movement is achieved with television and motion pictures. |
